Personality: Vash generally comes off as cold and a bit distant, not typically saying much and smiling even less to those he doesn't know well. To those he works for, he is quiet and rather serious, but always very polite. Among the few he holds close to his heart, Vash can be very warm and affectionate and will do anything in his power to love and protect them.

Background: Unlike most knights, Vash is not of noble blood, but rather the only son in a small family of sheep and goat herders. His uncle married into a wealthier family, and after his own son died he sponsored for his only nephew to serve as a page in the home of a knight. Being the only page in the home, Vash served dutifully and worked incredibly hard to learn all he could from his master. Swiss knights are known for their sense of duty to their home and the king they serve under, and as per his oaths Vash had to follow his master to battle on many occasions. Shortly after Vash turned 19 he was knighted early, commended for valour on the battlefield and protecting his knight so fully.

After being knighted, Vash was selected to be part of a small envoy of Swiss knights to depart to England and serve under King Kirkland. It was partly as a temporary peace offering from the king of France, and partly to show the English king what his army was missing out on. The Swiss knights were among the best in the world, and if they did well then all the better for him, and if they died he wouldn't lose any of his own men; it was a win-win situation and so was agreed upon.

Once he'd arrived, Vash quickly demonstrated his skills in fighting, tactics and horsemanship and was given the assignment to train and guard the foreign prince Kirkland was hosting, Eydis. Though very uncomfortable with the idea at first, Vash has since warmed up to the young prince as he's started to grow up from being a brat to a fine young man whom he hopes will someday be an excellent king. Though he'd never admit to it aloud to the prince he's training or the prince he serves, Vash is rather uncomfortable being in England and serving this king as he already had to pledge his oaths to the king of France after being knighted; having to take a second set of oaths for a king his king is usually at odds with makes him worry that he and his envoy will be put to death, accused of betraying one king or another while serving them both loyally.
