Character Name: Berwald Oxenstierna
Age: 24
Appearance: Berwald is a tall young man who's body shows signs of all the heavy things he has carried in his life. His hair is short and blonde in that typically Scandinavian yellowish colour. His eyes are a light greenish blue and his eyesight bad enough for him not to see much at all without his glasses. The hobbies he parttake in outside of work have caused the skin on his hands to thicken and despite his wealthy family his body show no signs of fat.
But when looking at Berwald it is none of these things that strike you at first glance. The only thing that catches your eyes would be the gloomy stare that shows from behind those glasses. His eyebrows are always furrowed and his mouth shaped into a scowl. Even at the rare moments when a smile could be seen it would look nothing like smiles any normal human being would be used to.
Staff or Patient: Doctor
Sexuality: Despite being educated in the field of the human mind and following tightly the discoveries of Sigmund Freud Berwald has actually never considered his own sexuality for even one moment. However, other people who spend time with him would quite quickly feel their "gay-dars" (Please excuse the use of a term so far too modern and not even invented yet) go off more or less slowly. As the Swedish man he is, it is men that his innermost desires look for.
Personality: To almost anyone Berwald would seem like a very cold person without feelings. This, however, is very far from the truth. The reason he chose this path in his life was not only family pressure but also a need to help people in need of it. He is a very soft person on the inside, wanting to care for people and give them what they need. However, despite being a very good listener he is not very good at determining what the person needs. This is probably his biggets problem as a doctor.
Berwald almost always seems calm to everyone. He barely ever talks, he just listens to the people around him. Whenever he does open his mouth the words that come out can barely be recognised as words by people not used to him. Emotions isn't something you would get out of him, despite them very much filling up every little space in him.
Background:Berwald comes from a very prestigious Swedish noble family. It was his ancestor Axel that led the Swedish Karoliner army at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century. Even through all these generattions the pressure for success lasted. Ever since Berwald was a child he liked playing with tree and making things. As a 10-year old he already had a whole room filled with soldiers made out of tree. With these he used to re-enact the stories of the Swedish days of glory that his grandfather told him. As he grew up he went over to building furniture instead. His pieces were decorated graciously, every detail finished to perfection. He had found what he wanted to do with his life.
However, that was in no way acceptable for someone named Oxenstierna. His parents wanted him to get the best of education and before he knew it he was present in Uppsala, studying medicine and psychology. Well, at least he got to pick that over the officer academy.
Once graduated he returned home to his family, only to find out that his mother was dying of a lung disease and there was nothing any doctor could do anymore. This was what killed his father, leaving him mourning with far too many bottles of expensive drinks. Despite all of Berwald's tried he just saw his father slowly fade away over the course of a year. In the end he gave up and took care of his father until the last day, never taking him to a hospital. After his death Berwald was left alone with his inheritance.
Once paperwork was finished he one day came across an article in Dagens Nyheter, about a "rehabilitation center for the mentally unstable" somewhere on the British islands. The center was looking for educated people to come parttake in the research and care of the patients who came from many different backgrounds. This was his cue.
