| House points are awarded to students at Hogwarts that do good deeds, correctly answer a question in class, or win a Quidditch Match. Each student earns points for his or her House, and at the end of the year, the House with the most points is awarded the House Cup. Points can also be taken away for rule-breaking. Teachers have the power to award or deduct points from students. Prefects, the Head Boy, and the Head Girl can deduct points as well, but not from other Prefects or students from Houses other than their own.
The House point hourglasses are four giant hourglasses located in the Great Hall used to record the number of house points that have been awarded or deducted. Each of the four Houses has their own. When points are awarded, gems will fall to the bottom, and when points are deducted, the gems will retreat into the upper half. A House cannot go into negative points; more points must be added once the gem count at the bottom reaches zero before more can be deducted.**NOTES: In some adaptations, the hourglasses are located in the Entrance Hall. For convenience/ease of finding them, they will be posted here. Also, the prefect point deduction rule was not entirely clarified by Rowling on her website, but this is how we will do it.**FOR PREFECTS: If you take away points, please post a short quote (i.e. "Francis took 10 points from Kiku for sneaking out after curfew in Taps and Bubbles") and the scores will be reflected here) * * * *
